After initial training in Parma with his father, the landscape painter, Giulio Carmignani (1813-1890), he continued his studies in Paris, where he discovered the art of Jean-Léon Gérôme and especially the landscapes of Corot. From 1862, he taught landscape painting at the Parma Academy. In 1877, he moved to Milan where he was appointed a professor at the Brera Academy. Giovanni Segantini was among his pupils there.

This composition, with its poetic realism shows the artist’s sensitivity and his interest in lighting effects.
